Gowerton year 8: 39 Gwyr year 8: 7

Perkins, Edwards and Williams grab a brace apiece in confident win.

Gowerton’s year 8 team produced their best performance of the season when they entertained near neighbours Gwyr at the Elba and scored 7 tries to defeat the visitors 39-7.

Gwyr kicked off and flanker Josh Thomas took a difficult kick and immediately passed the ball wide. That epitomised the ambition of the team which was to move the ball into space at every opportunity and the first try duly arrived by the ball being put through the hands allowing full back Matthew Newcombe to cut inside to score under the posts, fly half Joel Matuschke converted. The hosts’ forwards were providing a good platform for the backs, with man of the match Ethan Hall in particular running hard with the ball in hand. Matthew Newcombe again received the ball out wide which set up a scrum in the visitors’ 22. From the scrum the ball was moved wide for winger John Edwards to score in the corner. No.8 Tim Perkins was another forward who was impressive with ball in hand, and he made several strong runs into Gwyr territory. After a scrum in the Gwyr 22, No.8 Perkins added a third try when he picked up from the base of a scrum and managed to score out wide. Gowerton led 17-0 at the break.

The second period started with Gwyr on the attack, and they exploited a gap in the defence to score beneath the posts The try was converted. Gowerton wing John Edwards showed his versatility by moving to No. 8 and Gwyr found it hard to contain his strong runs. One run took him deep into the visitors 22 and although he was tackled short lock Connor Williams was on hand to pick up and drive over for a try that fly half Matuschke converted. No.8 Edwards was again instrumental in the next score picking up from a scrum and running into the Gwyr defence the hosts’ defence was again splintered and lock Williams was again on hand to power over.

The next score followed a fine touchline run from wing Charlie Smith, the forwards took the ball on before No.8 Edwards was on hand to score his second try. The final score of the game came when Perkins received the ball in midfield, he cut inside the visitors defence and ran 60m to complete the scoring.

Next Wednesday, year 8 host Penyrheol in the first round of the Swansea schools’ cup.
