Gowerton’s year 7 rugby team entertained neighbours Gwyr at the Elba. At kick off there was a strong cross wind that was going to make conditions very difficult for running rugby, but both teams were determined to try to do so.
It was the hosts who enjoyed the early territory with half backs Iwan Jones and Cameron Clayfield controlling field position with their intelligent kicking and elusive running. They opened the scoring in the 4th minute when centre James Northey scored following a kick deep into the visitors ‘22’ by scrum half Jones. Jones added the conversion.

Before half time, Gowerton added four further tries. Good work by Clayfield and full back James Williams put wing Jack Cosker clear and he sprinted 40 metres to score. Jones again converted. Two minutes later, it was full back Williams who benefited from another Clayfield break. Gwyr were struggling to cope with the power and pace of the hosts’ attackers and a fourth score came when lock Garin Thomas burst through the visitors’ defence and sprinted 60 metres to score. Scrum half Jones impressively added both conversions. Then wing Will Griffiths showed both pace and elusive running to score a try that meant Gowerton’s half time lead was 33-0.
Gwyr showed great character to dominate the third quarter with No.8 Dafydd Lewis carrying powerfully and scrum half Dewi Wake defending strongly and they deservedly scored when fly half Sion Murphy crossed following good work by Lewis.

Gowerton ended the game the stronger when centre Byron Davies scored a fine individual try when he beat several defenders to score from 40 metres and then in the final minute a fine passing move gave wing Jacob Williams the room to score in the corner.

The man of the match award was a close call between lock Thomas, No.8 Lewis Pennington and flankers Morgan Grey and Leon Bevan but it eventually went to Bevan for his energetic and unflinching defence.
