Combined team scrapes win over brave Gowerton.

Gowerton entertained the combined Gwyr and Bryntawe schools, Gwyr/Tawe in their final Aquazone sponsored Ospreys region league fixture. Both sides had lost only once previously and the result was likely to go a long way towards determining the winners of the inaugural competition.

The combined side kicked off and Gowerton were on the front foot immediately when hooker Rhys Cherry burst clear and set up an attack that saw the hosts going through multiple phases before Gwyr/Tawe were penalised. Fly half Phil Jones converted the penalty from 25 metres.

The lead was short lived though and the visitors were in front when Gowerton failed to deal effectively with the kick off and wing Mason Williams touched down in the corner, fly half James Davies added the extras from the touchline.

Gowerton’s forwards dominated the next quarter. The front row of Cherry and props Tom Northey and Richard Keefe were on top in the scrums and lock Ethan Harris was imperious in the line outs. The hosts regained the lead in the 9^th minute when a strong scrum drive won them possession and after a powerful drive from No.8 and captain Joel Young was halted just short, prop Northey picked up to drive over. Fly half Jones added the extras from the touchline.

Six minutes later, Gowerton added a second try. Another strong run from hooker Cherry set up an attack and when the ball was moved wide centre Shane Harris sliced outside his opposite number to touchdown and stretch the lead to eight points.

The second period started with Gwyr/Tawe on the front foot and they reduced the lead when a strong run by Welsh schools under 18 cap Rhys Gealy took play deep into Gowerton’s half and when the hosts infringed at the breakdown fly half Davies claimed the three points. Gwyr/Tawe now enjoyed their best spell of the game with flanker Cellan Ellis competing well at the breakdown, lock Rhys Irving doing well at the lineouts and wing Rhys Richards looking a threat out wide and in the 50^th minute their pressure told when fly half Davies scored a fine individual try with a side stepping run from 30 metres that saw him beat several defenders before scoring a try he converted himself.

The hosts needed to rekindle their efforts and well led by No.8 Young, whose driving play deservedly earned him the man of the match, they did so. Gowerton were back in front in the 57^th minute when the visitors pulled down a driving maul and Jones confidently stroked the penalty over. The end to end nature of the game saw the visitors back in front when Gowerton were offside 40 metres out and Davies again converted.

The final minutes saw a dramatic finale with Gowerton taking the lead in the final minute when Jones kicked his third penalty from 30 metres. There was just time to kick off and when Gowerton were penalised at the ensuing ruck, fly half Davies stepped forward to nervelessly convert the penalty from 40 metres. The final whistle followed and it was the combined side that claimed the spoils in a game that was an excellent advert for schools rugby.
