Four try Watkins to the fore in Gowerton win.
Gowerton travelled to Pontarddulais to take on opponents with whom they have always had close encounters, the most recent being last year’s cup final at St. Helens that had ended in a thrilling 13 all draw.
With the game being a friendly, both teams took the opportunity to rest their Swansea Schools’ representatives and for Gowerton, James Tanner, Jonny Lloyd, Aaron Smith and Matthew Williams all took the opportunity to ‘put their feet up’.
In the early stages it was the visitors who dominated and they raced into a 17 point lead with centre Ashley Watkins impressing with a hat-trick in the first 12 minutes.
Firstly, in the 2ndminute, a break by scrum half Leighton Lamb allowed fly half Matthew Protheroe to put Watkins into space on half way and he sprinted in for the first try. Five minutes later, Watkins added his second try. This time he created it himself when he broke through on half way and again outpaced the cover to score a try that Protheroe converted. Then in the 12th minute he completed his hat-trick when flanker Kieron Fisher won possession in a maul inside his ‘22’, he fed scrum half Lamb and Protheroe’s well timed pass again put Watkins clear on halfway for him to stride away and give Gowerton a comfortable advantage.

No contest, Ashley strides away from the defence to open the scoring.

However, any complacency they may have begun to feel was quickly knocked out of them when the hosts intercepted and sprinted the length of the field to score a try that was converted and cut their deficit to 17-7. This score, seemed to give Pontarddulais confidence and either side of half time they dominated and attacked with vigour. It was only Gowerton’s excellent defensive effort with No.8 Liam Morgan, prop Richard Keefe, scrum half Lamb and centre Anthony Osborne all prominent that stopped their line from being crossed again.

In fact it was Gowerton who added further tries, firstly after 39 minutes when full back Rhodri Tyrrell cut an excellent angle and crossed for a try that Protheroe converted. Then in the final minute wing Amir Makaleh looked certain to score only to be denied by a last ditch tackle. However, when Gowerton regained possession courtesy of a turnover from the impressive and industrious Liam Morgan, Watkins again left the home defence flat footed courtesy of his elusive running and crossed for his fourth try that gave the visitors a convincing victory.
