Gowerton’s year 7 rugby team travelled to Morriston for their second game of the season. Following their narrow defeat to Bishop Gore, the squad were determined to get their season up and running with a victory.
Things didn’t start well for the visitors. They knocked on from the kick off and from the resulting scrum, Gowerton’s weak defensive effort allowed the hosts to cross under the posts, the conversion followed and the visitors trailed by 7 points after only a minute.
Gowerton were soon onto the front foot and an elusive run from wing Luke Edwards saw him halted just short of Morriston’s line. When Morriston infringed at the break down, lock Garin Thomas powered forward from the penalty and although he was held up short of the line, prop Bradley Davies-Steele ripped the ball from him and plunged over for the visitors’ first score.

Defences were now on top and Gowerton’s  No.8 Lewis Pennington was to the fore for the visitors and the team’s had to wait until the 23rd minute for the next try. It went to Gowerton after good work by full back James Williams, hooker Tom McCann and wing and man of the match Jack Cosker gave centre James Northey the space to score. Fly half and captain Cameron Clayfield kicked the conversion and Gowerton led 12-7. However, the visitors were level before the break when a misdirected kick by the visitors allowed Morriston the opportunity to run back at them and again some weak tackling allowed the hosts to score a try that left the scores tied 12-12 at half time.
Centre James Northey grabbed Gowerton’s second try.
With the squad rotation policy seeing twelve changes being made at half time, the team took a while to settle when the second half got underway, and the hosts were again first to score with a try in the 28thminute.
However, the visitors eventually settled and with scrum half Iwan Jones prompting his forwards intelligently and fly half Byron Davies a strong and elusive runner Gowerton gradually began to gain control and with Morgan Grey, Tom Clarke and Jonny Underhill all showing up well they scored tries in the 34thminute when full back Williams crossed wide out and took the lead in the 40thminute when good work from scrum half Jones, fly half Davies and full back Williams gave wing Clayfield the opportunity to show his pace and outstrip the defence for a try that scrum half Jones converted.
Cameron Clayfield converts the second try, he also added a second half try.
Morriston added a fourth try of their own and were pressing for the winning score when the full time whistle went. Gowerton breathed a sigh of relief but they had deservedly achieved their first win.
