Gowerton’s 1st XV travelled the short distance to play Gwyr in the Ospreys schools under 18s league and despite a committed performance it was the pace and handling of the hosts’ backs that proved the difference between the teams and they came out on top scoring seven tries to three.

The hosts were in front in the 10th minute when full back Harri Evans sliced through a gap to cross for a try that fly half Josh Thomas converted. Thomas added a penalty three minutes later when Gowerton were penalised for offside in their 22.

Gwyr stretched their lead when first full back Evans collected a misdirected kick 40 metres out and set off on a mazy run that saw him evade several would be tacklers before scoring a fine solo try. Then centre Llyr Gealy finished off a fine move by crossing in the corner and with fly half Thomas adding the extras to both, they led 24-0.

In between Gwyr’s scores, Gowerton enjoyed periods of pressure of their own, with props Nathan Davies and Ryan Hughes and No.8 Will Griffiths all carrying strongly and they were on the board on the stroke of half time when No.8 Griffiths released wing Ellis Searle who squeezed over in the corner.

After the break, Gwyr stretched their lead when wing Ioan Wall finished off another fine passing move to score in the corner, but Gowerton responded strongly and a good run by lock Ryan Stagg allowed full back Tom Ham to score.

Gwyr’s Josh Anderson-Watkins then squeezed over in the corner before a Gowerton attack was thwarted when centre Dafydd Moscrop intercepted inside his 22 and sprinted the length of the field for a try that fly half Thomas again converted.

Gowerton deservedly grabbed a third try of their own when tireless flanker Leon Bevan set up a position from which hooker Aled Simons was able to drive over.

However, it was the hosts who had the final say when centre Moscrop crossed for his second score and Gwyr were comfortable victors 46-15.
