Gowerton year 7A: 24 Olchfa year 7A: 0
After last week’s defeat at Llangynwyd, Gowerton’s year 7 team entertained neighbours Olchfa at the Elba and bounced back impressively to record a win 24-0.
The victory was founded in the work of their back row. Flankers Ryan Stagg and Adam Williams worked tirelessly with Stagg particularly impressive with his non-stop work rate seeing him topping the tackle count. The man of the match award went to No.8 Darragh Cahill whose powerful ball carrying allowed him to make regular inroads into the visitors’ defence. For the visitors centre Sam Powell and lock Iwan Norman both defended strongly.
Gowerton were in front after 3 minutes when good work by flanker Williams and fly half and captain Matthew Davies established a position on Olchfa’s try line. The visitors defence was initially strong, but Gowerton’s consistent pressure was rewarded with a try for flanker Stagg who drove through several would be tackles to score. Centre Sam Cartwright added the conversion.
In the 9th minute, good runs by No.8 Cahill and wing Dylan Charles gave centre Ethan Lee the opportunity to sprint to the corner for their second try. The hosts stretched their lead when wing Charles scored their third try after prop Peter Legg-Davies and lock Sam Terry did well to win possession and Charles outpaced the defence to score from 30 metres. Fly half Davies added the extras.
Gowerton completed the scoring when centre Sam Cartwright ghosted through a gap after deft handling by full back Gavin Williams had given him the opportunity to do so.
Olchfa pressed for a score, but Gowerton’s defence with Stagg to the fore refused to yield and at the final whistle the hosts were deserved victors.
Callum Evans, Connor Bevan, Oliver Freeman and Matthew Davies all enjoyed the victory.
Gowerton year 7B: 12 Olchfa year 7B: 14
The two teams were also involved in a ‘B’ team game and in another competitive game it was the visitors who ended coming out on top.
Olchfa dominated the early period with wing EJ Cogger, centre Tom Davies and No.8 William Hurley all working well. They took the lead when centre Tom Davies sprinted clear from 30 metres. Hooker Ashton Rose then powered over from short range and with Danny Davey converting both they led by 14 points.
Gowerton responded strongly with locks Owen Parry and Brad Evans and No.8 Liam Butler all strong at the breakdown and with centre Connor Bevan a livewire in the loose phases they cut the deficit when scrum half Sam Terry scored and fly half Alex Hughes converted. Flanker and man of the match Isaac Clark then beat several defenders on a 40 metre run that allowed him to add a second try, but at the final whistle it was the visitors who remained in front.
Someone told Adam Williams that after beating Olchfa, Mr Harrison had said the squad could have a day off school-he wasn’t so happy later when he was told it was just a joke!!!
Penyrheol year 8: 21 Gowerton year 8: 0
Year 8 suffered their first defeat of the season when they travelled to Penyrheol and in a good and very competitive game, the hosts came out on top with Ollie Price scoring a brace of tries and Dylan Court added a third. Joe Burder kicked 3 conversions.
For Gowerton, flanker Jacob Rees defended well and was a constant threat at the contact area, while locks Connor Williams and John Edwards also worked hard in the forward exchanges. No.8 Tim Perkins was effective as a ball carrier and fly half Joel Matuschke looked dangerous with ball in hand.
