Gowerton year 11 entertained neighbours Olchfa at Gowerton RFC in their second Welsh schools cup game and maintained their fine start with an impressive 43-12 win.
Conditions were perfect for expansive rugby and both sides looked to keep the ball in hand which led to an entertaining game.
In the first half, Gowerton’s powerful pack dominated the forward exchanges with the front row of Steffan Gibbon, Jordon Liney and Tom Northey strong ball carriers, locks Ethan Harris and Sam Clark dominating the lineouts and flankers Max Harris and Will Jones controlling the breakdown. The strong running and uncompromising defence of No.8 Morgan Morris earned him the man of the match award.
Behind the forwards half backs Callum Lewis and Milo Fleming distributed intelligently and allowed centre Phil Jones to dictate play impressively.
The hosts scored six unanswered tries in the first half. The first came in the 2nd minute when full back Keelan Giles finished off a fine handling move involving many of the team, centre Tom Howell added an excellent touchline conversion. Giles added a second try four minutes later when he crossed after good work by centre Jones. In the 14th minute, more good work by centre Jones allowed No.8 Morris to power over for a try Howell again converted. Then in the 17thminute, an impressive catch and drive at a lineout saw Gowerton drive 30 metres for a try scored by hooker Jordon Liney. Howell converted.
In the 22nd minute full back Giles profited from a visitors’ mistake when he pounced on a dropped ball on half way and sprinted clear for a try. Howell again added the extras.
A try by wing James Hyatt who sprinted 20 metres to score in the corner after good work by flanker Will Jones completed the scoring in the first half and meant that Gowerton led 38-0 at the break.
Olchfa had done little wrong in the first half and started the second half in determined fashion with flanker Oscar Edgington working tirelessly and centre Ewan Gulley an incisive runner and strong defender and they deservedly got on the board when full back Miles Thomas sprinted 40 metres to score a try that fly half Joe Cosby converted. The hosts replied when strong running from hooker Liney allowed him to cross for his second try. It was the visitors who had the final say when fly half Crosby crossed but it was Gowerton who finished as victors 43-12 and now top their group.

Gowerton hosted Olchfa in the Welsh schools’ year 9 cup and the teams shared eight tries. But it was Gowerton who earned the victory by virtue of kicking an extra conversion.
The hosts back row of Joe Sopruniuk, Declan Duckworth and Joe Brightkey held the advantage at the breakdown allowing half backs Sam Cambriani and Dexter Ryde to control play.
Gowerton’s front row of Oliver Quick, Aled Simons and Ethan Guy worked hard throughout and lock Will Jones controlled the lineouts.
Gowerton’s centre Sean Collins scored 3 tries and fullback Elliot Rees added a fourth. Crucially full back Rees kicked two conversions which gave Gowerton a win and means they will take on Birchgrove in their next game as top of their group.
