Year 9 maintain form with ninth straight win.
Gowerton’s year 9 and 10 teams travelled to Cefn Hengoed to take on the hosts in two friendly fixtures. After last week’s tough fixture at Afon Taf, a large number of the year 9 squad were ‘rested’ and other players were given the chance to press their case for inclusion in the Welsh cup squad later in the month.
With some regulars ‘rested’ Jack Porter (above) and Sam Clark, Sam Baran, Max Harris and Ben Roberts (below) all played well and pushed their case for a place in the Cup teams.
Cefn Hengoed kicked off in dank conditions, but it was Gowerton who made the early running, with the pack dominating in the tight and loose phases. The front row of Sam Clark, Luke Snell and man of the match Steffan Gibbon were powerful in the scrums whilst the back five of Jacob Clark, Sam Baran, Max Harris, Ben Roberts and captain Ethan Harris caused havoc with the hosts’ defence with their rampaging ball carrying runs.
Gowerton took the lead in the 4th minute when good work by lock Clarkand centre Olly Smith allowed Gibbon to score in the corner. In the 13thminute they doubled the lead when a great tackle by flanker Roberts gave possession to full back James Rudderham and his great run gave Gibbon the space to cross for his and the team’s second try.

In the 22nd minute captain Ethan Harris charged down a defensive kick and won the chase for a try that fly half Jesse Howes converted. A fourth try was added before half time when good work by captain Harris allowed Sam Clark to score and at the break Gowerton had a comfortable 22-0 lead.
The second half started as the first had ended and scrum half Dominic Greeno crossed in the 40thminute following a strong run from Steffan Gibbon. Cefn Hengoed now showed their resilience and scored tries of their own in the last 10 minutes, two of which they converted. Gowerton’s only reply was an interception try of their own by fly half Howes and at the final whistle Gowerton had gained a convincing 32-19 win.
The squad’s next game is away to Pontarddulais when they travel for another friendly and will be looking to extending their winning run to ten games.

Year 10 knew they faced a tough challenge away to Cefn Hengoed, but took the lead in the first half with a try by David Dudley-Jones converted by Kieron Fisher. Cefn Hengoed replied with two second half tries, one of which was converted. As the game went into the last minute, Gowerton still trailed, but a powerful run by Liam Morgan allowed Steffan Tyrrell to cross for a try that Fisher nervelessly converted from wide out to give the visitors victory and maintain their undefeated start to the season.
For Gowerton, Matthew Protheroe controlled the game well from fly half and forwards James Tanner, Marcus Besley, Dylan Treharne, Liam Morgan and Aaron Smith all worked tirelessly and impressively.
