Howell hat-trick highlight of great team effort as year 9 progress to Welsh Cup knock out stages.
Gowerton completed their Welsh Schools cup group games when they entertained Bishopston at Gowerton RFC. They realised that they faced a tough encounter having played the visitors in last year’s Swansea Schools’ cup final. The team had prepared well for the game with training attendances being excellent in the run up to the match and the team’s commitment was rewarded with an impressive all-round display that left the visitors struggling to contain them and in the end they ran out comfortable victors scoring nine tries before the referee called time 10 minutes early with the hosts more than 50 points ahead.

For Gowerton, there were a number of fine individual performances. Centre Tom Howell had a personal tally of 23 points from3 tries and 4 conversions before he was substituted after 18 minutes, fly half Phil Jones, wing Steffan Tyrrell and locks Morgan Morris and Steffan Gibbon were all contenders for the man of the match award, but it was eventually given to full back Keelan Giles for his fine attacking running.
Mr Mason wasn’t very happy, there was a lot of ‘lying down on the job’.
Gowerton dominated the first quarter of the game, with centre Howell a dominating force and they took the lead in the 3rd minute when good work by lock Morris and No.8 Jack Cambriani allowed Howell to put wing Tyrrell over in the corner. Howell added the extra points with an excellent kick from wide out. Two minutes later, full back Giles crossed after powerful runs from Gibbon and Howell committed the visitors’ defence and quick handling gave Giles the space to cross for a try converted again by Howell.
In the 7th minute, a third try followed an intelligent chip by fly half Jones, Howell gathered and sprinted 40 metres to cross for his first try, he again added the conversion. Fly half Jones was next on the score sheet in the 10th minute when some excellent interpassing involving, wing Tyrrell, No. 8 Cambriani, centre Rhys Evans and full back Giles gave Jones the space to score in the corner.
Centre Howell completed his hat trick with tries in the 16th and 16thminute. The first followed a strike against the head by hooker Trystan Williams, centre Rhys Evans went on a 20 metre run showing both excellent balance and power before offloading to Howell who scored his second try. Then almost straight from the kick off Howell intercepted a stray pass on half way and sprinted clear to complete his hat-trick, he added both conversions to leave the hosts leading 40-0.
It was ‘thumbs up’ from hooker Trystan Williams.
There were no further scores before half time and Bishopston started the second half on the front foot and were initially only denied a score by excellent tackles by full back James Rudderham and prop Luke Snell. However, they deservedly got onto the score sheet in the 34th minute with an unconverted try. This only seemed to stir Gowerton and they added 3 further tries. The first came in the 37th minute, when a chip by fly half Jones was gathered by flanker Rhys Evans who passed back to his fly half who scored wide out. Then in the 44th minute, prop Morris powered over following good approach work by hooker Williams and No.8 Cambriani. Fly half Jesse Howes added the conversion. In the 50th minute a great kick and chase from Howes, set up a scrum on the visitors’ line. No.8 Gibbon picked up and drove over and after Howes added the conversion the referee blew for full time 10 minutes early with Gowerton more than 50 points in front.
Having won all their group games to comfortably top the group, the team will await eagerly the draw for the knock out stages of the competition after Christmas.

The yr 8 squad produced their best performance of the season to defeat Bishopston.

Another impressive win as year 8 go from strength to strength.
Year 8 maintained there recent improved form when they produced their best performance of the season to defeat visitors Bishopston 38-5 at the Elba.
Gowerton’s six tries were scored by flanker Ewan Brown (2), centre Sam Knight (2), No.8 Lloyd Dudley-Jones and wing Nick Williams. Conversions were added by centre Kieron Charles (2) and fly half Tom Ham (2).

For Gowerton, there were good performances from scrum half Lewis Gibson whose service was impressive, full back Jordan Penhalagan was safe and secure. Up front, Will Griffiths impressed with his work in the tight and at the rucks and mauls, whilst in the scrums, prop Nathan Osborne and hooker Joe Morris provided a solid platform, which allowed the back row and three quarters plenty of opportunities to attack.

The team will be looking to continue their improved form when they travel to play Bishop Gore on Wednesday.
