Year 7 find it tough against neighbours.
Gwyr year 7: 37 Gowerton year 7: 14.
Year 7 travelled across Park Road to take on next door neighbours Gwyr in a game arranged in a trial format with three halves of 20 minutes.

For the visitors, there were good performances from front row forwards Harvey Marshall, Josh Anderson and Ethan Wood who all carried well, behind the scrum fly half Cameron Bevan ran elusively, centre Ethan Davies ran strongly and wings Morgan Bradley and Jacob Garlick both looked a threat when in possession. Hooker Nathan Gardiner was the visitors’ player of the match with his tireless defensive efforts halting numerous Gwyr attacks.

The early stages of the game were well balanced but in the 7th minute the hosts had a scrum inside the visitors’ 22 and No.8 Evan Davies powered over to open the scoring. Gowerton replied when centre Davies sprinted clear from deep inside his own half and looked likely to tie the scores only to be halted by some great defensive work. Gwyr were rewarded with two tries in the next ten minutes from scrum half Cai Gealy and pacey wing Olly Thompson. Fly half Llion Jones added one conversion.

The visitors opened their account in the 18th minute when another fine run by centre Ethan Davies took him from deep inside his own half up to the hosts’ ‘22’and when he was brought down, possession was recycled quickly and moved to strong running centre Tyler Davies who rounded the last defender to dot down beneath the posts. Scrum half Iwan Morgan added the extras.

Gowerton were on top in the second third and reduced the deficit with a fine individual try from full back Reuben de Vall who gathered a loose ball on half way, beat two would be tacklers and had the pace to outstrip the cover and score a try he converted himself.

At the start of the third period, Gwyr’s lead was three points, but with flanker Lewis Edwards a powerful carrier, crossing three times, and scrum half Gealy adding another they ended up clear winners.

Gwyr 1st XV: 42 Gowerton: 24
The local derby between Gwyr and Gowerton saw Gwyr emerge victors. Gwyr’s early attacking play and intensity saw Gowerton concede a number of penalties and Gwyr took an early 6-0 lead. Their attacking play was then rewarded with a try out wide to take a 13-0 lead. Gowerton struck back when flanker Leon Bevan turned over the ball, hooker Rhys Flower and 2nd row Leo Pietrapetrosa carried well and scrum half Tom Davies sneaked through the back of the ruck to race clear and score. Gowerton were growing into the game and when full back Cameron Clayfield fielded a Gwyr clearance kick on the half way line it seemed impossible to think that he would score, but some scintilllating side stepping and a fine turn of pace saw him beat a number of Gwyr defenders on his way to scoring a fantastic individual try. With the game finely poised at 13-12, a poor kick off receipt saw Gowerton immediately under pressure and a charged down clearance kick saw Gwyr score their 2nd try of the game which was converted. The final act of the half saw Gowerton full back Clayfield score again to end the half.

The 2nd half saw Gwyr carry on with their attacking threat, and two tries saw them take a 30-17 lead. Gowerton did not let their heads drop and a good run from winger Joe Legg saw him cleverly grubber kick through the defence and flanker Sam Terry was on hand to collect the ball and score. Tom Davies added the conversion to make the game 30-24. Gwyr though were able to bring on a number of fresh legs and 2 more tries saw the Welsh school take the spoils 42-24.
