Brace apiece for Petherbridge and Collins gets yr 7 off to a winning start
Gowerton School’s year 7 and 8 rugby teams got their season underway when they hosted Cwmtawe at Gowerton RFC. The year 7 game saw Gowerton winning 24-15. Gowerton held the advantage behind with fly half Paul Packham marshalling his back line well. Centres Henry Aiono and Joe Hawkins-Cole distributed well which allowed pacy wings Ryan Collins and Sam Petherbridge to be a constant threat.
Prop Alfie Woodcock powers forward.
The visitors, were more powerful at forward and in captain and No.8 Jay Wood and prop Rhys Harris they had two powerful ball carriers, but whilst Gowerton’s forwards lacked physical stature they more than made up for it with their spirit with flankers Jamie Bevan and Ben Cort and locks Kian Webb and Zac Cook all fearless in the contact area. Cook’s defensive work won him the man of the match award.

The hosts stretched their lead with 3 tries inside the first 10 minutes of the second period. Collins grabbed his second when centre Aiono put him clear on half way. Fly half Packham converted. Centre Sam Petherbridge then grabbed a brace inside 5 minutes sprinting clear from 40 and 70 metres respectively. The first score came after good work from half backs Kieran Williams and Packham and the second was the result of the good distribution of centre Hawkins-Cole. Full back Tom Griffiths added a conversion.
