Year 10 start with a victory-but it has to be hard earned.
Blwyddyn 10 yn dechrau gyda buddugoliaeth- ond roedd rhaid ymladd am bob pwynt.
Full back Tom Howell contributed 13 points with two penalties, a try and a conversion.
After their Welsh cup final success of last year, year 10 got their season underway when they entertained Cwmtawe. Confidence was high after last year’s success, but Cwmtawe, who themselves had reached the quarter final of the Welsh Cup, were to prove tough opponents and the game would serve to show the team that all their opponents this year will ‘raise their game’ in an attempt to knock them off their ‘lofty’ perch.
Gowerton were led on to the field by regular captain Will Jones, and the squad was buoyed by the news that Will had been selected to captain Swansea Schools RU this season-a well deserved honour.

Gowerton took the lead in the 15thminute when hooker Jordan Liney touched down, full back Tom Howell converted. Howell stretched the lead with a try 2 minutes into the 2nd half, he missed the conversion and Cwmtawe were very much back in the game when they crossed for a converted try in the 42nd minute.
The result was now very much in the balance, but the hosts increased their efforts and Howell stepped up to kick penalties in the 44th and 47th minute to secure his team the victory. At the final whistle it was No.8 Morgan Morris who won the man of the match award.
Overall, the game was a bit patchy and coach Mr Lewis commented “I think the boys thought they were going to score tries every time they had the ball. The forwards were running in 1’s and 2’s and not as a unit, so they were turned over and penalised on a number of occasions. The backs were too flat in attack and dog legged in defence. A rusty start, but a win none the less-plenty to look at in training next week!!”
