Defence to the fore as year 10 progress to the semi-final.
Gowerton year 10 entertained Bishopston in the quarter final of the Swanseaschools cup at Gowerton RFC. The game was very competitive, with both teams defending with great determination and attacking with flair on occasions.
Gowerton held the advantage at forward with props Richard Keefe and Dylan Treharne and hooker Marcus Besley forming an effective front row. Back row forwards Liam Morgan and Joel Young were tenacious in search of the ball in the loose and tackled strongly, whilst behind the scrum half backs Jonny Lloyd and Mathew Protheroe dictated play skilfully but it was centre Anthony Osborne who won the man of the match award courtesy of his unflinching defence.

For the visitors, the pace of wing James Taylor posed a constant threat, fly half Angus Morris was elusive with the ball in hand and centre Macauley Ingleson was strong defensively.
Gowerton took the lead in the first half when good approach work from half backs Lloyd and Protheroe gave centre Ashley Watkins the space to evade the cover and score an unconverted try. This was the only score of the half and meant that at the break the hosts turned around with a narrow title.

At the start of the second half it was the hosts who started on the front foot and they increased their lead when a fine forward surge resulted in a try for flanker Morgan and Protheroe’s conversion stretched the lead to twelve points.

The visitors now began to find their feet and created a number of opportunities that were denied only by Gowerton’s excellent defensive work with flanker Morgan, centre Osborne and wing Leighton Lamb all prominent. However, Bishopston scented a comeback and continued to press but weren’t able to get on the scoreboard until the final minute when flanker Kieran Williams crossed for a try that scrum half James Griffiths converted.

There was only time for Gowerton to kick off and when the visitors turned the ball over, time was up and it was the hosts who progressed to play Cefn Hengoed away in the semi-final.
