Gowerton’s year 10 team played host to the Christ College team from Brecon. Gowerton expected a tough encounter having only achieved a last minute victory, courtesy of a try by Steffan Tyrrell, in last year’s game.

Christ College kicked off and Gowerton suffered an early blow when flanker and captain Will Jones received an accidental blow to the head in the 2nd minute and had to leave the field. The hosts recovered quickly and took the lead in the 6thminute when after winning several phases the ball was moved wide to lock Steffan Gibbon who outstripped the defence to score from 30 metres out.
The visitors replied when full back Ieuan James kicked a penalty in the 10th minute after Gowerton were penalised for offside.
This was only a temporary setback for the hosts and No.8 Morgan Morris scored two tries in a minute to put Gowerton in control. In the 16th minute, he picked up from the base of a scrum 5 metres out and powered over for a try that went unconverted, then straight from the kick off he showed he possessed pace as well as power when he sprinted in from half way. Centre Tom Howell added the conversion and at half time Gowerton led 17-3.
Gowerton increased this lead in the 27th minute when centre Steffan cut an excellent angle and breached the visitors’ defence, he fed co-centre Philip Jones and he crossed for a try that fly half Jesse Howes converted.

Christ College responded 4 minutes later when centre Trystan Williams seized on a loose ball and drove over for a try that full back James converted.

Gowerton stretched their lead with three tries in the final quarter. Firstly, hooker Jordon Liney who impressed by achieving a number of turnovers at the breakdown, crossed for a try converted by Howes. Then, centre Howell sprinted in from 30 metres, Howes again added the extras. Finally, good work by No.8 Morris allowed prop Tom Northey to complete the scoring and Gowerton had achieved a well deserved victory.

Gowerton’s next major test comes when they entertain last year’s Welsh Cup quarter finalists Brynteg at Gowerton RFC on Wednesday 21st November.
