Siarter Iaith Gymraeg at Gowerton School
Annwyl Rieni a Gwarchodwyr/Dear Parents and Carers,
I am writing to you in regards to Siarter Iaith Gymraeg (Welsh Language Charter) and the use of Welsh as a living language at our school. This year, as an English-medium school, we are working towards the Gwobrau Siarter Iaith Gymraeg/ Welsh Language Charter Awards. Our aims as a school are to promote the Welsh Dimension across the school and create a Welsh ethos whilst encouraging learners to use the Welsh language outside of the classroom.
In order to achieve our aims, we have created a Criw Cymraeg/Welsh Crew made up of our fantastic pupils and have launched Welsh Clubs for staff and pupils to develop their confidence conversing in Welsh. Our Year 7 pupils are very familiar with the requirements of Siarter Iaith and are keen to develop and promote their ideas on improving the Welsh ethos.
As a school, we are aiming to build on our strong foundations with the use of Welsh and move on to the next level in making the school and local area a bilingual community. A vital part of Siarter Iaith Gymraeg is working in partnership with the wider school community to support learners’ use of Welsh outside school.
Therefore, we need your help to support the learning and enjoyment of the Welsh language at home (including the use of Welsh language learning apps – Duolingo/Quizlet/Say Something in Welsh), engaging in Welsh school activities and helping your child/children understand the history, tradition and importance of our wonderful language. There is a section on our website (Curriculum Adnoddau Cymraeg/Welsh resources) which provides resources that will help you support the learning and enjoyment of the Welsh language.
We sincerely thank you for your support and please contact us with any ideas/suggestions for this important area of school life.
Cofion Cynnes/Kind Regards,
Miss E. Thomas
Swyddog y Gymraeg/Welsh Officer
