Gowerton were involved in a thrilling first round Swansea schools’ cup game when they hosted Penyrheol at the Elba.
Gowerton were in front in the 1st minute. Fly half Sam Cambriani’s kick off found touch inside the visitor’s 22 and although they secured the lineout, their clearance kick was charged down and flanker Jack Soproniuk pounced to gain the touch down and centre Adam Fielding converted.

The visitors dominated the next ten minutes as a lack of discipline by the hosts saw them conceding a number of penalties and their pressure resulted in a try in the 11th minute when centre Evan Budge crossed.
Gowerton re-established the upper hand and were rewarded with a second try in the 14th minute. Centre Sean Collins was tackled just short of the line and from the resulting scrum No.8 Adam Gammon picked up and powered over for a try again converted by centre Fielding and with no further scores before half time the hosts led 14-5 at the break.

Gowerton began the second half on the front foot, with the kicking of fly half Sam Cambriani allowing them to dominate field position but Penyrheol’s defence was unflinching with centre Evan Budge impressing both with his tackling and his work at the breakdown where he achieved a number of important turnovers. Having repelled Gowerton’s attacking threat the visitors grew in confidence and scored three tries in ten second half minutes. In the 34thminute a break by fly half Lewys Edwards put centre Budge clear and he fed full back Rhys Gear who scored their second try and three minutes later they were in front when wing Jack Cousins brushed off some tired tackles. In the 44thminute full back Gear scored his second try when he outstripped the cover to score from half way.

The hosts weren’t going to go down without a fight and realising that a converted try would still bring them victory they pressed for the winning score. In the final minute, fly half Cambriani took a penalty quickly and it allowed centre Collins to cross wide out, but the conversion from wide out missed and it was Penyrheol who deservedly progressed to host Bishop Vaughan in the quarter final.
