Gowerton power past Penyrheol into the quarter final.
Gowerton’s year 11 team travelled to play Penyrheol in the first round of the Swansea schools’ cup.
In the first half, Penyrheol played with the advantage of the breeze and the pitch was in perfect condition for open, running rugby.

The first 20 minutes were very keenly contested with both teams probing for weaknesses but defences were on top and the game remained scoreless. For Gowerton, prop Dylan Treharne, flanker Scott Smith and No.8 Joel Young were competitive in the forward exchanges, whilst the understanding between hooker Marcus Besley and lock Jack Petherbridge allowed them to dominate the lineouts. The hosts were similarly well served by captain and flanker Scott Rees and No.8 Bobby Jones. The hosts’ full back Corey Norman was dangerous with ball in hand whilst Gowerton’s centre Anthony Osborne was a powerful ball carrier and wing Nathan Williams looked threatening out wide. Man of the match was centre Leighton Lamb who defended strongly and created opportunities for others with his deft touch and accurate passing.

In the 20th minute, Penyrheol were on the attack in the visitors’ 22, but a loose pass was intercepted by fly half Mathew Protheroe and his speed off the mark took him clear and he had the pace to sprint 70 metres to score a try he converted.
Gowerton doubled their advantage on the stroke of half time when a sidestepping run by fullback Matthew Williams saw him slice through the hosts’ defence and cross for a try that Protheroe again converted.
In the second half, with the breeze at their backs and buoyed by the confidence of their first half performance, the visitors took control and increased their lead in the 35th minute when a strong run and clever offload by hooker Marcus Besley allowed flanker Liam Morgan to cross beneath the posts. Protheroe converted and added another conversion six minutes later after wing Rhodri Tyrrell powered over from 15 metres.
Gowerton completed the scoring in the 50th minute, when good work by lock Alex Freeman allowed hooker Besley to cross. Wing Tom Froom converted.
