Pentrehafod year 9: 5 Gowerton year 9: 45.
Year 9 were faced with the difficult challenge of visiting Pentrehafod with an under strength team to play for a spot in the final of the Swansea Schools’ Cup.
Luckily Gowerton had a secret weapon: Water from a Merthyr spring had been carefully selected prior to the game – one sip and the players were invigorated. We have ordered a bus full for the Final!!!!
Gowerton started the game exceptionally well with a flurry of tries from outer backs Said Mohammed and Sam Knight. This continued with further scores which allowed Gowerton to show off their precise handling; in particular the work of Kieran Charles and Tom Ham. The early scores allowed Gowerton to relax and as a result, despite being under strength they produced some of their best rugby this season. This was highlighted by some crisp passing from Jordan Penhalagon and Will Griffiths.

Pentrehafod fought back strongly with some barnstorming runs, this was met with some stern Gowerton defence; Lewis Cooke, Kieran Charles, Lukas Kelly and Luke Andrews all making telling tackles. With Pentrehafod struggling to make any inroads into the Gowerton defence their discipline faltered. Gowerton benefited from this and were able to regain the impetus after bouts of defending.
Gowerton’s spirit was tested most just before halftime when Pentrehafod managed to score and threatened a comeback. Gowerton soon reasserted their domination through some barnstorming runs from Morgan Evans and Chris Hughes. This allowed for further scores which saw an air of confidence exist at the half-time break.
The aim for the second half was to ensure Pentrehafod did not score. This was achieved as a result of some excellent leadership and marshalling within defence of Will Griffiths and Kieran Charles.

Tom Ham: Who despite feeling aches and pains and carrying an injury put his body on the line for his colleagues. Unfortunately Tom will be on holiday during the final; his presence will surely be missed.
Daniel Tippett: Our sole replacement on the day. Daniel was required to enter the fray early in the game and acquitted himself exceptionally well.
Samer Makahleh: Who reverted from wing to second row for the fixture and played with energy throughout.
Lastly: Discipline, despite some stray boots and hands the Gowerton team remained focused on the task in hand and can be very proud of their display.
