Recently the school was asked to say a few words about Mr Dean Mason as he had been nominated to carry the Queen’s Baton Relay on 3rd July on Swansea Promenade. We immediately replied with the following:
Mr Dean Mason has taught at Gowerton School for over 40 years. In that time he has inspired both pupils and staff . As a PE teacher and Head of Geography he has influenced pupils in their academic and extra curricular lives. Most recently in coaching the Senior Rugby Team he has inspired Dan Biggar, Liam Williams, Sam Davies, Keelan Giles, …the list is endless. He has established Southern Hemisphere Tours that enable our rugby, football, netball and hockey teams to visit New Zealand, Austrailia, for 3 weeks every 3 years.
In addition to this he has recently set up boys and girls cricket teams. Mr Mason retired from teaching with us 2 years ago but returned to the school as a mentor, working with pupils to support and educate individuals. Any school event, whether it is sporting, singing in the staff choir, charity run, Remembrance Service, Mr Mason would be there supporting and helping in any way possible.
Overall Mr Mason is one of the kindest, most thoughtful people you will be fortunate to meet and the Gowerton School community have been blessed to have him working with us for all these years.
He also has a huge impact on Gowerton village life with his work in the cricket club. It was due to his hard work that the recent 4 days of Jubilee celebrations were so successful.
We are so proud that Mr Dean Mason has been chosen to carry the Queen’s Baton as part of the Air Show on Sunday. From 15.30pm – 15.40pm Dean will be carrying the baton approximately 200m on the sea front path beside the cenotaph.
As a school we thank Dean and wish him all the very best for Sunday.
We are also proud that An ex pupil and proud Gowertonian Paul Karabardak will be carrying the baton from 16.20pm.
We hope they have a wonderful day
