Gowerton School rugby set to write a new chapter.
Gowerton School which has a rich tradition in producing senior rugby internationals and counts Dan Biggar, Liam Williams and Sam Davies amongst its recent former pupils who have donned the senior Welsh jersey, has opened a new chapter with the formation of their first girls’ rugby squad.
Eighteen girls attended the first training session where they were tasked with undertaking some small passing and catching games. They then began to gain an understanding of the rules by playing one of its rugby offerings (touch).
In future sessions, the girls will choose from 3 options which will work on the basis of “stage not age”, allowing them to pick what they want to do depending on where they feel comfortable.
After weekly training sessions this term, the aim will be for the girls to attend games and festivals after Easter in all of its 3 offerings.
Mr Kyle Tucker the school’s WRU hub officer said “The school is excited about providing this opportunity and looking forward to seeing attendance increasing as the term progresses. Long term we hope all the girls will go on to enjoy playing and supporting rugby and perhaps one of them may go on to follow in the footsteps of their famous male predecessors and achieve selection for the senior Wales women’s team.”

There are quite a few ex Gowerton girl pupils who have gained international caps at different age groups. I wish the girls all the success in a game that you will love being involved with, on and off the pitch. You’ll make friends for life. And learn new skills every time you run on the pitch. Hard work always pays off but please remember to enjoy it.
Fantastic opportunity, quite a few of the girls have already benefited from playing for Waunarlwydd and Swansea Hawks.
