Gowerton find it tough against their neighbours.
Gowerton 1st XV: 12 Olchfa 1st XV: 22
Gowerton entertained Olchfa at Gowerton RFC in the Aquazone sponsored Ospreys schools league. The heavy overnight rain meant that the underfoot conditions were greasy and handling was difficult and after a keenly contested game it was the visitors who returned home with a deserved win.
It was the hosts who applied the early pressure, prop Ryan Hughes and No.8 Luke Andrews both carried strongly and with scrum half Iwan Jones snapping at the heels of his pack it took a committed defensive from the visitors to keep their line in tact. With confidence boosted, Olchfa attacked and with impressive fly half Alex Wilson orchestrating play intelligently they opened the scoring in the 11th minute when full back Tom Langdon crossed.
The visitors took control of the game with two tries in the next ten minutes. The first was a fine individual effort from fly half Wilson who brushed aside two tacklers deep inside his own half and raced clear to score beneath the posts. Full back Langford added the extras. Scrum half Zac Devey then showed his pace when he intercepted a stray pass on his 22 and sprinted to score in the corner.
Gowerton’s front five were beginning to gain the upper hand in the set piece with the front row of Hughes, Aled Simons and Nathan Davies on top in the scrums and in the 33rd minute, hooker and man of the match Simons took a scrum against the head in the visitors 22 allowing scrum half Jones to put centre Steffan Tyrrell over for a score that fly half Dexter Ryde converted to leave the visitors 17-7 in front at the break.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Gowerton enjoying the majority of territory and possession but unable to reduce the deficit due to the tenacity of Olchfa’s defence with flanker Kieran Morris to the fore.
Gowerton eventually broke through with four minutes left when lock David Carpanini powered over from short range. The game was back in the balance, but not for long, as the visitors re-established their ten point lead when wing Callum Ellwin crossed. The final whistle followed shortly afterwards and the visitors returned home victorious.
Honours even in Welsh cup contests.
Bryntawe yr 11: 32 Gowerton yr 11: 12
Gowerton’s year 9 and 11 teams travelled to Bryntawe for the third leg of their Welsh Cup group fixtures and returned home honours even with both teams winning a game apiece. The hosts won the year 11 game 32-12. For the hosts, a brace of tries from full back Iwan Beggs plus one apiece from fly half Rhys Edmonds and centre Rhys Morgan along with two penalties and three conversions by Beggs saw them comfortably home with Gowerton’s reply limited to a try apiece from scrum half Iwan Jones and centre Jacob Williams. Jones also added a conversion.
Bryntawe yr 9: 20 Gowerton yr 9: 35
The visitors came out on top 35-20 in the year 9 game to keep alive their hopes of progressing into the knockout stages of the competition. Gowerton’s tries were scored by Teigue Williams (2), Darragh Cahill, Peter Legg, Liam Butler, Ryan Stagg and Leo Pietrapertosa.
