Eight tries as year 9 maintain Welsh Cup momentum.
After victories over Bryntawe and Pontarddulais, year 9 travelled to Cefn Hengoed in confident mood for their third Welsh Cup group game. Their confidence was not misplaced and they returned with a convincing victory, during which they crossed the hosts’ line on eight occasions.

The game kicked off in fine dry conditions, but there was a strong cross field wind that could make playing conditions difficult. Gowerton were on the attack from the kick off, and took the lead in the 5th minute when they took a scrum against the head and scrum half Milo Fleming burst down the blindside to score in the corner.
In the 11th minute, the lead was doubled when good work from prop Morgan Morris, centre Rhys Evans and hooker Luke Snell allowed wing Jack Porter to cross. Three minutes later flanker Steffan Gibbon powered over following a good run from full back Jordan Rewbridge and great linking from man of the match, lock Sam Clark. Then in the 20th minute wing Jordan Marshall added the fourth try after good work from No.8 and captain Jack Cambriani and fly half Steffan Tyrrell. With the difficult wind making kicking difficult, none of the tries were converted and Gowerton’s lead was 20-0 at half time.

The pattern was similar in the second half with the visitors adding further tries in the 32nd minute from man of the match Clark. Captain Cambriani crossed in the 40th minute following a fine 40 metre run. Morgan Morris added the conversion. The next score went to Cefn Hengoed who competed well throughout and got a well deserved converted try in the 33rd minute. But it was Gowerton who finished the strongest adding tries from Rewbridge and Snell in the final five minutes which left them comfortable winners.

Gowerton take the half term break in a good position with three wins in their group, but aware that November brings tough fixtures with the Swanseafestival taking place in the first week after half term and then their final Welsh Cup group fixtures away to Olchfa and then at home to last year’s cup finalists Bishopston.
