Seven try Year 9 advance in cup.
Bishop Gore year 9: 14 Gowerton year 9: 41.
Gowerton’s year 9 team travelled to Bishop Gore in the quarter final of the Swansea schools’ cup and produced a fine all round performance that resulted in them crossing for seven tries and returning with a 41-14 win.
Gowerton’s defence was tested on a number of occasions.
Gowerton’s victory was based on the power of their forward effort with props John Edwards and Cameron Davies, lock Kai Pressdee and flankers Jacob Rees and man of the match Rhys Jones all powerful ball carriers. Behind the scrum, the distribution of centres Charlie Williams and Kobe Bowen allowed scrum half Joel Matuschke, full back Matthew Newcombe and wing Ben Petherbridge to impress with their elusive running.
Lock Alex Jones impressed in the lineouts.
The hosts were very competitive and were well served by No.8 Carwyn Martin and flanker Ike Fabb whilst the defensive work of centre Wilf Tessler and wing Alfred Chisango was unflinching.
The visitors took the lead in the 5th minute when their forwards, with flanker Jones to the fore powered to the line and hooker Rhys Flower drove over for a try that scrum half Matuschke converted. Gowerton doubled their lead six minutes later when scrum half Matuschke fed wing Petherbridge who dived over in the corner. Matuschke added the extras with an excellent kick from the touchline.
Ethan Hall and Tim Perkins halt Bishop Gore’s progress.
Bishop Gore opened their account in the 17th minute when good work by centre Wilf Tessler set up No.8 Carwyn Martin who powered through several would be tacklers to score a try that fly half Jacob Condon converted. It was Gowerton who ended the half on the front foot and in the final minute they were rewarded when strong carries by lock Pressdee and flanker Rees took the visitors into the 22 and prop Edwards drove over for a try that meant they led 19-7 at the break.
Five minutes into the second period, the visitors extended their advantage when good work by prop Davies, flanker Rees and centre Williams allowed lock Pressdee to cross. Three minutes later a break by scrum half Matuschke was carried on by full back Newcombe who, despite having a lot to do, was able to score a try that scrum half Jac Simons converted.
A lineout catch and drive resulted in a try for Jacob Rees.
It was Bishop Gore who scored the best try of the game. Gowerton appeared certain to score only for No.8 Tim Perkins to be denied by an excellent tackle from centre Tessler, he turned over possession and that allowed his side to counter attack and go the length of the field for flanker Fabb to score a try that fly half Condon converted.
However, it was Gowerton who had the final say with two tries in the final five minutes. First, wing Olly Bruce scored in the corner after being released by an excellent pass from centre Kobe Bowen and then flanker Rees finished off a catch and drive from a lineout. The final whistle followed and Gowerton will travel to play neighbours Gwyr in the semi final.
