The weather continues to decimate the schools’ rugby programme, but during a break in the weather, Gowerton’s year 7 team travelled to Sketty Lane to play Bishop Gore.
Despite the recent spell of rain, the pitch was in excellent condition and with the rain only noticeable for its absence the teams had the opportunity to play some enterprising rugby and they produced an entertaining game with kicking infrequent and the ball in play for long periods.
The hosts were the first to threaten with hard working prop Nicholas Rees impressing in the contact area and they deservedly took the lead in the 6th minute when lock Curtis Doyle scored in the corner. Gowerton replied in the 10th minute after a surging run by lock Connor Williams gave centre Charlie Smith space and he sprinted in from 30 metres despite a great attempt to tackle him by full back and captain Sam Bevan.

Bishop Gore were back in front in the 16th minute when the hosts’ man of the match No.8 Ike Fabb burst through the visitors’ defence after good work from centre Jacob Condon. Gowerton crossed for their second try when prop John Edwards drove into the hosts’ defence. When he was tackled the ball ran loose and flanker Alex Jones kicked ahead and won the chase to ground the ball. The conversion was missed and the teams were level at the break.
The second half started with Gowerton on the front foot and they effectively sealed victory with three tries in a ten minute spell. In the 28th minute, centre Matthew Newcombe escaped a tackle on half way and showed his pace to score a try that scrum half Jac Simons converted. Five minutes later Gowerton’s man of the match, centre Ben Petherbridge showed his elusive running skills when he avoided several tacklers to score a try following a powerful run from No.8 Tim Perkins. Then in the 37thminute, prop Edwards scored a try that his non-stop work rate deserved when he finished off good work by lock Mabon Kaniewski.
The hosts now enjoyed their best spell of the game with centre Condon and debutant wing Ricky Lee-Jones both threatening and the visitors defence was severely tested. No.8 Fabb was initially only denied by a great cover tackle from centre Newcombe, before he deservedly grabbed his second try when he powered over after a good run from full back Bevan. Centre Condon converted and the result was back in the balance with 5 minutes left.
However, it was Gowerton who had the final word scoring the best try of the game when wing Daniel Warne crossed after centre Petherbridge and forwards Rhys Jones, Josh Thomas and Kieran Helliwell all linked well. The final whistle followed and although the visitors returned victorious, both teams deserved great credit for their performances.
