Geography ‘AS’ residential fieldwork 2016.
The year 12 geography class of 23 students accompanied by Mrs Roberts, Mr Sorley, Mr Lewis and Mr Mason attended the Field Studies Council centre at Nettlecombe court near Taunton in Somerset, from Wednesday 13th to Saturday 16th April.
The course was preparation for the fieldwork element of the external year 12 exam, which contributes 33% towards their final grade.
The practical work completed, will enable them to undertake their own fieldwork enquiry, which will then be assessed in an exam at the end of the A2 exam.
The students worked in the Exmoor National Park, along the river Holford in the Quantock Hills, and in Taunton, covering all aspects of the physical and human fieldwork elements of the external exam.
Accommodation was in the Tudor mansion which was clean and warm and eating in the Great Dining Hall was a never to be forgotten experience.
The students received exemplary teaching from the centre and were able to access the most up-to-date fieldwork techniques and resources. Students were certainly fully prepared for the fieldwork element of this summer’s exam.
During the course the group studied;
At the end of a tiring week, all were glad to get back to their own beds, but agreed, that a good and very worthwhile time had been had by all.
Kaitlyn Egan, Lowri Evans, Beth Dickeson and Olivia Hutchings measuring the infiltration rate on bare ground.
A rare sight-the rugby boys all working at the same time!
Well, you deserve a bit of ‘downtime’ when you’ve been working as hard as Lukas Kelly, Joe Dickinson and Ben Brown.
Callum Batcup measuring pebble length.
Abbey Rodrigues said, “If I’ve got to go in the river, Owain Davies is coming in too.”
Ryan Hughes measuring river gradient.
Lowri Evans prepares to measure river velocity.
Kieran Charles measuring channel depth.
Teamwork to the fore as Kaitlyn, Lowri, Beth and Olivia all take on different roles.
