Gowerton Year 9 have had quite a hectic start to the season with some positive performances and some disappointing results, however after this performance it is safe to say the “boys are back”.
Individual talent was evident in abundance throughout the performance, however this has always been the case – more evident and more important was the team ethos and the team spirit that was shown throughout. This was evident from the first minutes with the players accepting the referee’s decisions without question – professionalism I am sure that will hold the team in good stead come more difficult challenges as the season goes on.
Will Griffiths and Tom Ham led the team with dignity and endeavour and enforced the desire for improved discipline – this was a huge factor in the end result.
Some great surges from the base of the scrum by Lloyd Dudley Jones and Ewan Brown produced the go forward ball from which try after try would eventually come.
In the backline a more ruthless and accurate performance was achieved – some excellent distribution from Sam Cambriani and Kieran Charles allowed for the outer backs time and space to enjoy. Sam Knight having his best game this season ran hard and distributed at the right times – this allowed wingers Nicky Williams, Said Mohamed, Lewis Hyatt and Kevin Cheung to all enjoy running at a broken defence.
In the forwards Lukas Kelly and Jamie Jones provided a stable platform from scrum and lineout from which the victory was created while having seven front row forwards; Lewis Cooke, Ben Brown, Morgan Evans, Daniel Rogers, David Carpanini, Ryan Hughes and Nathan Osbourne all playing well selection for future games will prove difficult.

Man of the Match was a difficult call; Tom Ham looks more than comfortable at scrum half and possesses the desire and appetite required for the role. Captain Will Griffiths was as always 100% committed with some abrasive tackles and barnstorming runs, his qualities as a leader are developing game to game and for his players he is easy to follow. However, Ewan Brown produced a match winning performance by constantly questioning the breakdown – often stealing the ball, linking well in a speedy backline and scoring some long range tries.
In all, Gowerton crossed the Morriston line on seven occasions with flanker Brown grabbing a personal hat-trick, whilst No.8 Lloyd Dudley-Jones, centre Sam Knight and wings Nicholas Williams and Said Mohamed scored a try each. Centre Kieran Charles converted 5 and also added a penalty.

Quote of the Day: Tom Ham: “Wow everyone is playing well today” This is largely down to a team spirit that is evident and should this continue then the Gowerton School Year 9 Rugby Team 2012 -2013 should welcome challenges from all quarters.
The next two big events are the Tom Ham V Will Griffiths Game and the training day during half-term. Those players disappointed to have missed out will get their opportunity to perform during both of the events and will hopefully provide further selection headaches.
